Saxtead Bottom Riding Stables, Suffolk, UK
Visited: July 2014
Just up the road from the quaintly English village/hamlet of Framingham in Suffolk lies Saxtead Bottom Riding Stables, a small, friendly yard with around 10 or so horses and ponies. The stables opened in 2013 and is becoming well established in the village, offering lessons, hacks into the rolling countryside, and even the chance for the more adventurous to give vaulting a go.
After a 20 minute assessment with the owner Hannah, who thoroughly checked that I could ride competently enough at walk, trot and canter I set off on the lovely Etty, a been-there-done-that riding school horse in her late teens with a placid nature but a real whizz when she gets the opportunity! We had superb weather for exploring the countryside which inspired Constable's famous landscape paintings, particularly the glorious sunshine which made the horizon shimmer as we cantered beside golden fields of crops.
